The National Gallery of Victoria International is displaying their rich holdings of 18th century porcelain sculpture, including a number of rare and important works by Continental and English factories, on display until January 2017.This is the first large-scale exhibition devoted to porcelain sculpture held at the NGV and features more than 70 works from the permanent collection. Porcelain figures are often thought of today as merely ‘decorative’ objects, but in the 18th century these objects were admired as examples of the sculptor’s art and many were created by some of the leading sculptors of the day. Subjects were often mythological and allegorical and played a part in the richly symbolic visual culture of the Baroque court, particularly in Central Europe. The exhibition is on view at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. For details, visit: http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/eighteenth-century-porcelain-sculpture/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
