The ongoing exhibition, 'Three Colours Black', at New Pinakothek, Munich, will end on January 9, 2017. This is your last opportunity to check out some remarkable works from the 19th century at the museum. In the exhibition, featuring a select group of works from the museum’s own collections, focus is on paintings from the 19th century, highlighting a period in which the treatment of darkness and black was getting its own identity, although still attached to the older traditions. Black as a color plays a crucial role in the history of painting. It stands as a metaphor, a compositional device and sometimes a challenging factor for a painter from a technical standpoint. Black has been used to add depth to dark areas, it has been placed as a suggestive tool to portray a shadowy life or the dark side of a soul; in portraits, black clothing reflects fashion and social status. The exhibition showcases a total of 15 works, which are the juxtaposition of creations by Johann Heinrich Füssli, Édouard Manet, Franz Xaver Winterhalter and masterpieces from Simon Vouet, Diego Velázquez, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. In this ensemble, both the diversity of the artistic approaches and relationships across centuries will come into focus. The exhibition is on view at the  Museum of Asian Art, Lansstraße 8, 14195 Berlin, Germany.Click on the Slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
