The ongoing exhibition 'Romanticism and Modernism: Drawing as an Art Form - from Casper David Friedrich to Vincent van Gogh' at Kulturforum in Berlin will end on January 15, 2017. This is your last opportunity to check out this exhibition which will take you through the transition of classical European art tradition into Modernism. 19th century was a period of reforms, in terms of romantic enchantment, industrialization as well as in the world of art. The era saw changes in art’s subject matter and forms, media and methods for creating images, aesthetic categories and perspective and responses of spectators. The medium that exhibits the change the most is drawing - it vividly highlights the creative process, and gives immediate insight into artistic ideas. The exhibition will compile around 130 works to underscore the crucial aspects of the gradual shift from the classical European art tradition to Modernism. Iconic works, including never-before-exhibited masterpieces from the 19th century, will be brought together revealing similarities and contrast between the two styles - brush drawings (sepia and watercolour) by artists like Casper David Friedrich and line drawings (pen and ink) by artists like Ferdinand Olivier.Adolph Menzel’s virtuoso paintings on paper from his ‘Kinderalbum’ contrast the blurred, monochrome head studies from his later period, which feature a complete diffusion of line. Finally, by including outstanding works by Vincent van Gogh, Giovanni Segantini and Odilon Redon, the exhibition will trace the international development of drawing as an autonomous art form. The exhibition is on view at Kulturforum, Matthäikirchplatz, 10785 Berlin, Germany.
