Experience the beautiful and sublime works of one of Japan’s greatest artists Katsushika Hokusai at British Museum, London through August 13, 2017. Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely regarded as Japan’s most famous and influential artist. He produced works of astonishing quality right up until his death at the age of 90. This new exhibition will lead you on an artistic journey through the last 30 years of Hokusai’s life – a time when he produced some of his most famous masterpieces. You can see his masterpiece ‘The Great Wave,’ as it is brought out of storage for this exhibition. Since 2011, the woodblock print has been kept from public view because prolonged exposure to light would cause its colors to fade. The exhibition, sponsored by the Mitsubishi Corporation, is the first in the UK to focus on Hokusai’s later years, when he produced images of landscapes, deities and mythological beasts. Also included is a self-portrait of the artist aged 83, which included a letter to his publisher. Hokusai continued working until the end of his life, and the final image in the exhibition is a dragon rising from Mt Fuji, which he produced shortly before his death, aged 90.The exhibition ‘Beyond the Great Wave: Hokusai’ opened on May 25, 2016 and runs through August 13, 2017 at The British Museum, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG.For details, visit: www.britishmuseum.orgClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
