An exhibition of works titled “Beyond Caravaggio” is on show at the National Gallery in London through January 15, 2017.The show, which focuses on Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s artistic influence on both his contemporaries and followers, explores the geographic and imaginative extent of his power, presenting works by an array of Continental painters who imitated his style such as Rutilio Manetti and Orazio Gentileschi. His premature death at the age of 39 made his work especially sought after in subsequent decades, though the idiom fell wholly out of favor in the mid-17th century. It took close to 300 years for discerning historians to bring his accomplishments to the forefront of Renaissance art, citing his naturalism and dramatic lighting as pioneering effects that changed the course of fine art in Europe.“Beyond Caravaggio” is on exhibit at the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN.For details, visit: www.nationalgallery.org.ukClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition
