Roughly translated as artisan crafts, the Japanese traditional art of kogei is an expression of the cultures established in the Meiji period in the 19th century, with techniques that include ceramic painting, lacquer work, figurative expression, and decorative cups and vessels. The contemporary practitioners of kogei, however, tend to draw from modern Japanese trends such as anime and manga. This results in an extremely diverse oeuvre of work that is being presented by the Museum of Arts and Design this month in Japanese Kogei | Future Forward. The exhibition will feature 12 established and emerging kogei artists, and examine how their works reflect a somewhat controversial shift from that of their traditional counterparts, embracing a higher degree of individual expression or addressing more global, rather than local or cultural, issues.Japanese Kogei | Future Forward runs from October 20 through February 7, 2016 at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York.
